Well, I just returned from a very wonderful vacation in beautiful south Florida and a great 7 day Caribbean cruise. It was so nice to be in such nice weather -- got healthy doses of vitamin D...maybe a little bit too much! I also learned that one of my paintings was sold at the Randy Higbee 6 Inch Squared show! I sure wish that I could have attended the reception, but maybe I'll make an effort and drive down to see the show before it closes. But now, back to painting!

Wow, what a trip! My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful Scandinavian cruise that covered many countries. Here a a few photos of our adventure. We started our round-trip cruise in Copenhagen.

Above is the beautiful medieval village of Tallinn, Estonia.
We have the Winter Palace behind us, also much better known as the Hermitage Museum in St Petersberg, Russia.

I'm off for another adventure - this time it is a Scandinavian cruise with the highlight being a 2-day stay in St. Petersberg, Russia! I am very much looking forward to the excursion to The Hermitage Museum. Another stop that should be interesting is the Absolut Ice Bar in Stockholm, Sweden, where the year-round temperature is kept at 23 degrees f. I will post a few photos when I return.

A recent commission

I recently finished this commission of a cycling team making their way on a road in Death Valley toward Dante's View. The painting will be auctioned off to raise money for the team who are called "Tieni Doro" (it is a phrase shouted by cycling fans in Italy to encourage their favorite riders... it basically means "stay strong").

If you want to see a master of cycling paintings (as well as race cars and beautiful countryside paintings), you have to check out the work of Rob Ijbema at his blog, Painting le Tour. Rob's paintings really capture the sense of speed and the excitement of the race.

This is an old trailer park that has been in the city for decades and I have always loved the sign - a bit of Americana.

I'm Back!

We are back from our very wonderful Caribbean cruise. We lucked out on the weather, though at times it was a bit hot and humid. Here are a few photos of our adventure.

This is the ancient Mayan city of Xunantunich in the jungle of Belize. We walked to the top of this temple and enjoyed a great view. A lot of people in the past only went up once.

This is the Mayan city of Tulum which is perched on the cliffs overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea in Mexico.

And in Grand Cayman we did the stingray and dolphin encounter which was a lot of fun. We tool a 30 minute boat ride to a sandbar where very tame stingrays of all sizes would swim around their visitors.

Meet Beau

Meet Beau, the newest addition to our family. It was a 3,500 mile round trip road trip to get him, but it was worth it. It took us 2 days to get to San Antonio, Texas from the SF Bay Area and 3 days to get back home (which was still a LOT of driving). As well as picking up our Beau, a very sweet east going almost 1 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who instantly fit into our family, we got to enjoy the very beautiful city of San Antonio - we loved it so much, we hope to return to it again someday.

Well, my wife and I are off on another road trip - this time it is to San Antonio, Texas, to get our little girl, Sophie, a little brother - another Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She's been a bored and lonely little dog since she lost her big brother in January. We leave early tomorrow morning with Sophie so she can get acquainted with her new friend and to see if they get along (Sophie loves everyone, so it should work out fine). Plus, we've been wanting to see San Antonio and check out the Riverwalk. I'll post photos of our new pup when we return.

Well, I finally finished the ceiling mural in our master bedroom. It turned out to be more of a challenge than I thought it would be, but it was worth it, my wife and I are very happy with the way it turned out. The putti are based on photos of us when we were toddlers. The photos don't really do it any justice - it looks much nicer in person.

Yesterday I discovered that my artist buddy in Costa Rica, James Parker, had presented me along with another wonderful artist and outstanding person, Sheila Tajima, a "keepsake" he had created to show his appreciation. I am deeply honored and very appreciative of what he had written about me. Thank you, James, you are a gifted artist and a super person who posses a wonderful sense of humor. I always get a big smile or a good laugh whenever I read your blog - thank you for that. I wish I could present the keepsake to you, you are very deserving of it.

My Short Adventure - The Grand Canyon & Las Vegas in 4 Days

My wife and I and our very dear friend, Gary Hanauer, just returned from a wonderful 4 day adventure. We left for the Grand Canyon on Friday expecting to get there in about a 10 hour drive....but things didn't quite go as expected. When we were about to go over the Tahachapi Mountains, the California highway patrol closed off the road just a few cars ahead of us due to a snow storm. So we had to do an 8 hour detour though Los Angeles and had to deal with the famous LA traffic. Anyway, when we get about 75 miles away from Williams, Arizona, we get stuck in a snowstorm and have to drive many miles at 20 mph or less -- mostly less, all the way to our hotel. So after about a 20 hour drive we show up at our hotel at 5am and get about 2 1/2 hours sleep then grab a bit of breakfast and then catch our train for the Grand Canyon.

On the way home we spent a night in Las Vegas and saw a wonderful Cirque du Soleil show, Le Reve. This is me and my wife front of our hotel (fantastic hotel). We had such a wonderful time. And luckily we were able to cross the Tahachapi Mountains on the way back - yeaaaa!

Tully's - Plein Air

Well, this is the result of a plein air painting day in downtown Pleasanton, CA. I helped introduce my new friend and fellow blogger, Sheila Tajima (check out her wonderful blog by clicking on her name), to the plein air scene. She watched as I painted this scene and with her coaxing got me to reluctantly post my painting ;) I'm somewhat happy with it, but I have a long way to go to get where I'd love to be proficiency-wise. And for those of you who aren't sure what plein air painting is, it is when an artist sets up his easel outside to paint and tries capture a moment within a short amount of time before the light changes too much.
