Beach Girl

7.5"x12" oil on panel
Another contribution to Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks blog. I really enjoyed painting this one. It got me thinking about one of my favorite artists, Edward Potthast, and his wonderful beach scenes.

EDWARD! Wow, not only did you already finish the challenge but you hit it out of the ballpark! You painted something I find the most difficult to do so perfectly. Skin tones I mean. I love your masterful and precise brushstrokes but how you also kept it loose and beautifully painterly.

Edward- You know you've nailed it when folks say they can feel the sun on THEIR skin! I have been that kid on the beach (minus the bikini top), with a boogie board- right at sunset. Awesome job capturing the mood. -T

Great Edward! The warm light makes it look like late afternoon and only a few more waves before dinner.....

Your paintings always have wonderful warmth! Really beautiful.

This is very warm and sensitive. Lovely!

I love this one Ed. I like the hint of pink in the sky, and the handling of the child's face (it could be anyone, but it's there--and that's not easy to achieve).

Edward, this is so special. You've achieved that special all day at the beach glow! Everything here is just perfect -- crisp colors, bold shadows, just a hint of late afternoon color in the sky...breathtaking!

Stunning! Edward, this is superb. Gorgeous glowing light. I love the pinkish whites, and red peaking through the sky. Equal to Potthast.

Wonderful painting Edward! You've caught that golden light that (for me) turns this into a California beach scene. Your reflections are great, her stance looks natural and the composition is strong. Great job!

Oh my goodness...this is breathtakingly beautiful! I love everything about it. Her skin tone is that perfect gold that only true sunlight captures and the sand "feels" really wet. Love the bold strokes, particularly the bikini and the horizontals on the board.

When you have 44 comments (this one makes it 45) and none of them are from the artist... I think that says something about the piece being discussed. I have been waiting to see if any other version trumps yours for my favorite and nope! No one's has. KUDOS. I am TRULY awed by this one, Edward.
