Karin Jurick's Portrait of Edward Burton

For the last assignment of the year on Karin Jurick's blog Different Strokes From Different Folks , Karin asked artists to send in photos of themselves which she then assigned to other participants. When I took a look at her blog last night I was blown away to find that it was Karin who painted my portrait! I am extremely delighted with the portrait and I am VERY honored that she did my portrait. Thank you, Karin, beautiful job!
The outfit that I'm wearing is a souvenir I got when my wife and I were in Tunis, Tunisia a few weeks ago.

I'm Back

Well, I'm just back from a very wonderful European and a little bit north African vacation with my wife, Kim (here we are on the Grand canal in Venice). We were very lucky with the weather and very fortunate that we started our trip in Venice because it flooded there later on - the worst flooding there in more than 20 years!
Now it is time to get back to painting and I'm sure I will be posting a few paintings inspired by the gorgeous cities we saw. My first task is to get back to posting paintings on Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks blog - have to have some new paintings on it when the January issue of Southwest Art Magazine comes out! We also saw many incredible ceiling murals in the old palaces of Venice which were very inspiring -- I really have my work cut out for me with my own ceiling mural - which is coming along slowly.

Autumn Shadows

6"x6" oil on linen

Another contribution to Karin Jurick's Different Strokes From Different Folks.
My wife and I will be going on a vacation soon so it may be a little while before I will have something new to post. We are going on a 10 day Mediterranean cruise - it leaves from Venice, Italy (I will be celebrating my 43rd birthday there!), first stop Dubrovnik, Croatia; at sea; Santorini, Greece; at sea; Tunis, Tunisia; at sea; Malaga, Spain; Casablanca, Morocco; at sea; and ends in Lisbon Portugal. I can't wait!

Some Great News!

I have been contributing paintings to a blog created by artist Karin Jurick, Different Strokes From Different Folks, where each week she posts a photo that she has taken and invites artists to create their own version of it which she then puts on her blog. This morning I logged on to my computer and was thrilled to find a message from Karin stating that an editor for Southwest Art Magazine will be doing a story about her blog and that she would like to include one of my paintings! The painting she specifically asked for was my portrait of Karin's beloved dog, Jack.
I am very honored and excited to be included in the story which will be in the January issue of Southwest Art Magazine.

Jessie's Cows

Just thought I'd include a painting of cows that my great grandmother, Jessie, painted years ago.
The story I heard was that her husband, great grandpa Wilbur, had wanted a little farm with cows, but that never came to be, so Jessie painted this for him.
*A little historical note - Jessie was the first postmistress of Charles City, Iowa, around 1899.

My studio companion

Just thought I'd include a photo of my studio companion, Sophie. She just naps away on that old chair while I work at my easel -- I'll often hear her snore, she's quite a little character.

Painted Saw

Oil on old saw
This was commissioned by one of my cousins. It is on an old saw she found in an antiques shop. The scene is of my parent's house in Healdsburg, California, which looks over the beautiful Dry Creek Valley. My dad designed it and did a great amount of the building of it on his own, all while battling liver cancer. My parents loved it there.

The ceiling mural...so far

Well, the progress is going slowly, but I am happy with the way it is looking. The main pain is getting the perspective to look right. More photos will be posted later.

My New Mural Project

Well, I am currently working on a mural for the ceiling of our master bedroom - it is my anniversary present to my wife and it is something she has wanted for a long time.
The mural is inspired by eighteenth-century ceiling murals found in Venetian palazzi and will include a balustrade with urns, lots of blue sky with scudding clouds, a few birds flying about, and last but not least a couple of putti with a long garland of flowers. I will be posting photos of my progress soon.

One of my favorite artists, Karin Jurick , has set up a new website, Different Strokes From Different Folks , where once a week she will post a photograph on the site and invite artists to take that photo and do a version of it in their own style. This is my version of the first posting, Karin's beloved dog, Jack.
